Meditation on Carnaval
During Carnaval, in Rio de Janerio, the use of the mask allows for a critique of our society. It is through this critique that Brazilianscan turn the patriarchal values of our culture upside down. Coming back to Brazil after a period of living abroad, I face the following conflict:
can I be as free in my country as I was when I living elsewhere? Can we choose the mask we want to use in our own land? In Brazil, is Carnaval the only time when we pretend who we wish to be? And outside of it, what masks do we use?
